European mole crickets (Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa) are large, extraordinary-looking insects, with front legs adapted especially for shoveling dirt. Males create shallow tunnels from which they call to females, who fly on favorable nights.
Mole crickets are secretive beings and don't like to be seen. Occasionally on a nighttime flight, they might crash into people, who often react with terror at this creature that looks like a mixture of insect, bird, and mole. Despite their fearsome appearance, their huge "claws" are for digging only, and mole crickets are harmless to humans.
This life-sized pin measures approximately 2.5 inches wide. Soft enamel + epoxy, double posted.
