Ebony Jewelwing Pair Enamel Pin

Sale price$15.00 USD

$4 flat US shipping / free US shipping for orders $50 and up

Like other damselflies and dragonflies, the Ebony Jewelwing begins life underwater. Juveniles (called naiads) voraciously hunt small prey like mosquito larvae and tiny fish, until they grow large enough to surface and molt a final time into their flying adult form.

Females have iridescent gold-green and violet-brown bodies and white spots on their brown or black wings. Males have even flashier blue-green bodies, sometimes with violet tones, and perform courtship displays and dances for females.

During copulation, pairs form a "mating wheel" in a heart shape for several hours. The male grips the female behind her head and carries her around during this time. The female lays her eggs on rafts of floating plants in slow-moving forest streams, and the male stays nearby to guard her.

This enamel pin features anodized rainbow metal inspired by the Jewelwing's color and shine. Pins are double posted and come on our Bug Box kraft backer.
