“You might be a king, or a little street sweeper, but sooner or later, you’ll dance with the Reaper.”

The “Danse Macabre” or Dance Macabre genre was already ancient history when Alfred Rethel made this woodcut in 1851, entitled “Death the Strangler”, but its influence on him is clear. No one escapes the Reaper’s song, not even the wealthy partygoers at their masquerade.

Danse Macabre art showed death as the great equalizer, with everyone from royalty to peasants forced to join the revelry.
