Known for its eye-popping colors, this spider hides just outside its beautiful web with one foot on a “signal thread”. When prey becomes ensnared, the signal thread wiggles and the spider dashes out to deliver a fatal bite. Females become quite large with a body length of up to 20 mm (about 3/4 inch) minus their legs, and their round, bright abdomens often earn them the nickname “pumpkin spiders”.
Eggs are laid in October, and hatchings emerge the following spring. Marbled orbweavers are harmless to humans, who often enjoy watching the spider and its web grow as the Halloween season approaches.
