All channels speculating on “what” the riot is about; asking, what isn’t it about?

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

With the images coming out of the UK, the shots of giddy young people sprinting by bewildered shop keepers, marches in the streets, anger, arson, as well as armed and hand to hand combat with the police, by, perhaps, the largest uncontrollable segment of society, the youth and poor, we must ask ourselves, either, are the people revolting against a system which appears not to care about them, or capitalizing on a public situation which consumer culture has created, banks and business over public facility and utility, brutality as opposed to civic discourse. What it truly seems to be about is the sum total of every person on the streets motives, the back lash of what unequal distribution of wealth and power, as well as a twisted concept of what society deems necessity in terms of consumer products, has done to this milieu.

With the numbers of participators as high as appear in the reports, perhaps we have to look not at why these people are rioting in the instant, but how society could be creating a situation where its people are revolting violently.
